The Bruery
Orange County, CA

The Bruery is a small, family run brewery founded by Patrick Rue and run by Patrick and his family. They currently distribute in Arizona, California, Colorado (lucky me), Oregon, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. Influenced by flavor rather than beer styles, their beers are 100% bottle conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized.

While most of the beers are Belgian-inspired, and the packaging has a Belgian look, the Bruery uses a number of American or non-traditional ingredients that to achieve a distinct style of their own. Sweet potatoes, Thai seasonings, cocoa nibs, pecans, maple syrup and lavender are used in their seasonal offerings. The year round collection is more style-concious, but includes a Wit, a Saison made with rye and a Berliner Weisse. Not exactly ambers and pale ales

I've tried the Orchard White, Saison Rue, Saison de Lente (wonderful!!), Two Turtle Doves (unbelievable!) and Trade Winds Tripel. All would receive my rating of 4 or 5 glasses, not for being true to style but for being great tasting beers.

The Bruery will soon be distributing in other eastern states, including Wisconsin, so keep an eye out for the 25 oz brown bottles and colorful labels. [more...]

O'Marro's Publik House in Oshkosh is the new home of
the Society Of Oshkosh Brewers! 8 good beers on tap and many, many more in the cooler. A good music selection and live bands! Stop in and say hi to Shawn and Brandy!

Previous Meetings

Novernber, 2005: O'Marro's Irish Pub, Oshkosh

On Wednesday, November 16th, The SOB's will be meeting at O'Marro's Irish Pub, corner of 20th and Oregon Streets in Oshkosh. O'Marro's is the site of the former Winemaker Restaurant in the Lake Aire Shopping Center. The Pub features about 8 (good) beers on tap and around 150 bottles (many of the variety we as homebrewers enjoy) in the large, two-sided case behind the bar. It's a spacious bar with a large area in back with booths and pool tables. Adjacent to that space is a fairly large hall, which featues bands on the weekends. this is where we will meet. The place even has Wi-Fi (wireless) internet acces for your laptop (must have a wireless card installed). We may even have a demonstration of our website. Please try to attend as we will be discussing the upcoming beer dinner for our club.

Jun. 12, 2004: 5th Annual Wisconsin Homebrew Bash

Keith's Homebrew Bash keeps getting better every year. Already the premier homebrew gathering in the state, Keith has plans to make it even better in 2004.

Nov. 2003: New Glarus Brewery Discussion

The SOB's were treated to an interesting discussion by Jason from New Glarus Brewing Co. The meeting was held at Robbin's Restaurant in Oshkosh, and Jason gave us the latest news from one of the most respected craft breweries in the country. There was also plenty of samples for the group. Thanks again to New Glarus and Robbins!

Aug. 20, 2003: Port Wine, suggested by Jon Jorgensen

This meeting was the first of two dedicated to Port Wine. We discussed the techniques used to make Port Wine and tasted a few commercial examples, including some California Ports and a variety of Portuguese selections. Thanks to Jon Jorgensen and Keith Akstulewicz for bring the samples. All SOB winemakers are then encouraged to try making a Port for the second meeting in a year or so, at which time we'll do a taste test. Port Wine is a rich, intensely flavorful red wine fortified with Brandy and aged in wood barrels. They have a unique history and are made using techniques specific to this style.

July 18: Brew a Triple Bock, hosted by Jay Jackson

Jay Jackson hosted a brew day at his house, and made a Triple Bock in preparation for the upcoming Holiday Contest.

June 16: Using Hops

HBU's. IBU's. What's the difference? How do brewers predict how bitter their beers will be, and how do they select the right hops for a particular beer? In June, we attempted to answer some of these mysteries. We discussed the various methods of predicting hop bitterness and encouraged members to plan their brews using IBUs. We also discussed a new tool available here to compute hop bitterness. Try it out!

May 21: Road Trip to Slab City Brewery

Thirteen SOBs traveled by rented van to Slab City Brewery near Bonduel. Bill Winsand was our host for the meeting, offering us a great tour of the brewery, an interesting look at his old brewhouse and some great samples of beer.

The SOBs left Oshkosh and met our Fox Cities members at Trim B's. We had a few minutes to kill while we waited for a couple of SOBs to arrive, so - go figure - we had a beer. We arrived at Slab City at approximately 7:30 and started off with an interesting tour of the brewery. After that, Bill opened the taps. Several of us took a look at Bill's old brewhouse, which used to be the farm's milkhouse. We also toured his "golf course."

Thanks again to Slab City for a great road trip. And thanks to Leonard Stanek for being our designated driver.

Apr. 16: Brown Ale, by Mike Fairservice

Mike Fairservice gave an informative presentation on the history, brewing techniques and sensory profile of Brown Ale. Mike provided thirteen different samples, including two homebrewed recipes. Great meeting, Mike!

Feb. 19: Blending Beers, hosted by Mark Stanek and Greg Franzen

With the exception of a "Black and Tan," the blending of beers in the glass is not widely practiced. Germans blend beer with lemonade or fruit syrups, but rarely two or three different styles of beer. Mark and Greg have been experimenting with different flavor combinations, and they shared their best and worst blends in February. Some of the most interesting included a Bigfoot + Capital Lager + Weissbier combination that was really nice. Another was a Weissbier + Pumpkin Spice blend that reminded many of us of Worchestershire sauce.

We were also joined by members of the Oshkosh Jaycees who discussed plans for the upcoming Brews 'n Blues Festival. More on that to follow.

Dec. 18: Annual Holiday Contest

28 beers were entered in three categories in this year's Holiday Contest. The Best of Show winner was Jon Jorgensen for his excellent "Barleywine #1," a smooth, rich and alcoholic English-style barleywine. Congratulations to all winners:
