Lucky 13
Lagunitas Brewing Co.
Petaluma, CA

Lagunitas has made a big impact in Wisconsin. Their unique American ales have struck a chord with Wisconsin beer drinkers looking for more flavor than the Blatz or Pabst their dad drank.

Besides their regular lineup that includes a Pale Ale, IPA, Maximus and Pilsener, the brewers from Petaluma offer a terrific seasonal selection that varies every two or three months. Lucky 13, a "Mondo Large Red Ale," is one of two seasonals available during the summer.

Lucky 13 is indeed large, weighing in at 8.3% ABV. It also delivers an impressive hop bitterness and wonderful deep copper color. If you are lucky enough to find it, you'll definitely like your first bottle. The problem is I'm not sure you'll enjoy the second or third as well.

As a hophead, I hate to say it, but I really think this beer is hoppier than it should be. I had a friend years ago who succeeded in making the most over-the-top bitter beer imaginable (over 90 IBUs in a 1.040 beer!). Lucky 13 is not anything like that, but the hops are slightly out of balance. As I said, you'll love your first Lucky 13, especially if you are a hophead. But, do you enjoy the second or third as much?

I strongly recommend Lucky 13. It would be a great compliment to smoked barbecue ribs or even a spicy brat. But unless you are impervious to bitterness, don't expect the second one to taste as good as the first.

O'Marro's Publik House in Oshkosh is the new home of
the Society Of Oshkosh Brewers! 8 good beers on tap and many, many more in the cooler. A good music selection and live bands! Stop in and say hi to Shawn and Brandy!

What Have the SOB's Been Doing?

April 28, 2007: Club Road Trip to the new location of Central Waters Brewing in Amherst, Wisconsin

March, 2007: N.E.W. Beer Festival in Appleton

Another terrific beer festival, put on by Stone Cellar Brewpub and Flannagans in Appleton! Lots of people, great food, and of course great beers.

Jul. 12, 2003: 8th Annual Brews 'n Blues Festival, 1-6pm

The Oshkosh Jaycees put on another great beer festival, and the SOBs had a great time serving up our homebrew. Our Weizen Doppelbock, a cask-conditioned wheat beer brewed on May 17th with 60% German wheat malt, Munich and Pilsener malts, turned out better than we could have hoped, but it left us so fast.

Jeff Potts of the Oshkosh Northwestern wrote an light-hearted article about the event. If you didn't see it on July 17th, check it out here.

Jun. 14, 2003: 4th Annual Wisconsin Homebrew Bash

The Wisconsin Homebrew Bash is probably the largest celebration of homebrew in the state. The party was held on secluded land near Appleton, and featured an unbelievable variiety of homemade beer, wine, mead and cider, along with a handful of craft-made commercial beers. Food included a roasted pig, hamburgers and a variety of snacks, sides and desserts provided by the party-goers. There was also live music with hillside seating like an ampitheater.

In conjuction with the Homebrew Bash, the SOBs hosted the 1st annual Stout Stagger homebrew competition. This was a sanctioned AHA and BJCP competition open to all homebrewers.

The Wisconsin Homebrew Bash is a joint undertaking by the Society of Oshkosh Brewers (SOBs), the Green Bay Rackers, the Appleton Libation Enthusiasts (ALES) and Lake Area Homebrewer’s Guild (LAHGER). If you are a member of any sanctioned homebrew club, consider yourself invited next year. For more information, contact the SOBs.

May 17: Club Brew for the Brews 'n Blues

Randy Bauer hosted our brew day at his home on Lake Butte des Morts. The weather cooperated, and the beer is finishing up in it's secondary fermenter. We had a nice turnout for the day, with 10-15 SOBs and family members sharing the workload, along with a lot of great food and beer. Along with our club Weizenbock, Mike Engel brewed a batch of Scotch Ale.

Although we ran into a few wrinkles due to the mix of different people's equipment and processes, the brew went well. The starting gravity was 1.079, with a target of 1.080. Fermentation started at about 72 degrees and cooled slightly. Our fermenter was a 7.5 gallon plastic fermenter with a small hole in the lid. Typically, I simply cover the hole with Saran Wrap. By the next morning, foam was literally shooting out the hole, leaving quite a mess on my basement steps. With the amount of foam, I decided I needed to attach a blowoff tube, but I neither had a tube big enough to fit snuggly in the hole or a rubber stopper small enough to fit. The solution? Clean the lid with sanitizer and tape a large stopper with an attached blowoff tube over the hole with Duct Tape. Problem Solved? Not yet!

With the increased resistance of a blowoff tube filled with foam, the pressure increased enough to BLOW OFF THE LID! Again, foam all over the steps. Solution? Tape the lid down with Duct Tape. By the time I got all the leaks sealed, the top was almost completely covered with tape. But not to worry, the beer tastes fine, and when I racked it to a secondary fermenter the gravity was 1.014.

This year's festival, sponsored by the SOBs and LAGHER, ALES and the Green Bay Rackers, featured homebrew, live music, a roasted pig, swimming, games and, for the first time, a homebrew competion. There was a tremendous variety of homebrew along with commercial brews by Fox River Brewing Co. and Oconomowoc Brewing Co.
